Brooklyn Museum First Saturday sponsored by Target
On the first Saturday of each month Target sponsors free music, art, and entertaiment at the Brooklyn Museum.
The museum typcally closes at 6 PM but stays open until 11 PM during this event series.
It is free but due to capacity issues, some First Saturday events require tickets. So I would highly recommend going a bit early to secure a ticket.
We drove over for the last one… and it was a mad house. Next time, I will be better prepared. I did end up there the next day to catch the Annie Leibovitz and Ron Mueck exhibits.
The line for Annie Leibovitz was down the entire length of the 4th fl. Seriously, check out the museum during the week on Wednesday. Their current exhibits are just so good it is really attracting more people than usual.
If you can’t check out the museum for Annie Leibovitz- the American Masters series on the History Channel has been airing her story and work. I caught it the other night, and it was just as good in many ways as seeing the photographs in person. It was actually playing as part of the exhibit too. Her life story heightened my appreciation for her photography, there are few suprises to her background and lifestyle.
Ron Mueck in contrast was totally surreal. He creates both large scale and tiny life like sculputures of infants, the elderly, and much more. And when I say large, we are talking like the size of car and with meticulous life like detail. I had just as much fun watching people freak out and gasp over the details such as blood marks, umbillical cords, toenails etc. as I did the whole context of his work. Perhaps the response and shock is the real beauty of his art. Hmmm?

Both are ending soon, so ya better get on over if you live in the metro area…it really is worth the trip.
